Why A Set Of Practices Might Be Better Than That One Habit.

Most of us have a completely unrealistic view of goals & habits.

Do this one thing every day without fail, don’t break the chain or else you’re a complete failure of life. OK, granted that escalated quickly. But life isn’t so neat and tidy. So instead of beating ourselves into submission how about we try something different?

What if we looked at goals & habits differently?

Personally, I don’t set goals in the usual way and I’ve started to steer away from rigid tracking & counting for habits. I’ve found it gets me into an obsessive and anxious state which I’m not sure is good for making habits stick.

Instead, I choose becoming goals and practices.

Firstly, I ask myself who I want to become. For instance this year I wanted to ‘become a creator.’

The next step is to choose a set of practices. I ask myself what kind of activities does the person I’m becoming do? Because it makes sense that if I do those things I’ll become that person.

But the key I’ve found is the set of practices. So rather than just choosing one thing to do over and over again, each day I choose from a pool of practices. For instance in my quest to become a creator I could:

  • Publish something
  • Draft something
  • Edit something
  • Practice headlines
  • Send a tweet

Having a set of practices means I can choose something to do despite my energy levels, what’s happening in my day, global pandemics, family life. Life can be messy, and I can still feel like I’ve made progress towards who I want to become.

Star to design your set of practices and see how much happier you are in the pursuit of your goals & habits.
